TELLER’s lens sees her in the distance, pouring water onto her hair in the middle of a dark, monumental forest. Despite the seeming contrast between her curated look and the natural background, LAMY’s visual persona is equally as mesmerizing and untamed, with a rawness which only Juergen TELLER could capture. Fashion photography giant Juergen TELLER photographed cultural icon Michèle LAMY for System Beauty Magazine. This limited pentaptych sees LAMY in a Los Angeles bathtub, her eyes following the viewer. 

In the editorial, TELLER and LAMY seek to explore the concept of beauty. The contrasting textures present in the photo make for an interesting visual blend - from the roughness of concrete and clay, to the softness of foam which envelops her body. The signature black attire and makeup stand out against the toned color palette - a testament to LAMY’s dark originality.

Michèle LAMY as seen through the eyes of Juergen TELLER. The limited triptych features one of the photographs featured in an editorial for System Beauty Magazine, exploring the concept of beauty in its many forms. 

The portrait is an example of TELLER’s masterful style, capturing the raw individuality of his model who, lying against a concrete floor, is facing the camera with hypnotizing intensity. Well-known elements of LAMY’s distinctive aesthetic are also front and center, pulling our gaze to the jewelry pieces, black fingertips and bold makeup. The collaboration is a meeting of two strongly conceptual artistic worlds.

This artwork Cup Noodle, made in the kitchen during John Yuyi’s 2019 stay in Tokyo, has never been shown as part of any exhibition, publication or art fair.

Apart from the noodle cup with the artist’s face on it, nothing in the photograph is set-designed – not even the garlic. After the shoot, John Yuyi ate the cup noodles, which were also subsequently reprinted as a sticker.

Playing on the phrase I love you, the artwork was showcased at John Yuyi’s installation exhibition in Taiwan. When sketching the idea, the artist was inspired by the things that are easily accessible in our home and daily life. She went to a 100 yen shop in Tokyo in search of ideas, and then photographed the chosen object in the sink of her friend’s apartment.

The piece draws our attention to the hidden advertising behind the most approachable things in our daily life. To make it more lifelike, she picked a random selfie taken that same morning. The resulting artwork is emotional, personal and poetic, while also fueling the consumer culture discussion at the heart of the project.

Smoke Me 1 - JOHN Yuyi

The featured image was taken in 2019 as a commissioned editorial project for Self Service Magazine while John Yuyi was traveling to Tokyo. It is inspired by the phenomenon of influencers putting products next to their faces and posting them to social media for promotional purposes, as well as by more traditional advertising practices, where the ambassador’s face is placed on the product they are selling.

As a contrast, John Yuyi focused on using faces and skin as a canvas, filling them with temporary tattoos depicting corporate icons, products and selfies of the people she photographed.

SUPREME FUCK SKATEBOARDS '2 SKATES'

The featured artwork is Patrick MARTINEZ’s reflection on the feeling of hope in the face of a global crisis. It draws its inspiration from a quote by author Rebecca Solnit: “Inside the word “emergency” is “emerge”; from an emergency new things come forth. The old certainties are crumbling fast, but danger and possibility are sisters.”

The depiction of a broken neon sign with “Emerge” as the focal point, calls on viewers to lean into the unknown and trust in a positive outcome, no matter how difficult the present condition may be.

Emergency — Patrick MARTINEZ

The featured painting is inspired by scenes of conflict often encountered on the streets of Los Angeles. The juxtaposition of colors and patterns is an ode to the iconography of the city, specifically the green and orange hues of storefronts, colorful tile, graffiti and mural paintings. 

Cacaxtla Conflict (El Sereno To Alhambra) — Patrick MARTINEZ

The printed solo edition features quintessential tapestries of the Los Angeles landscape - tile, neon and bougainvillea flowers. Climbing up the purple wall are ancient Mayan serpents, serving as a memory of the past as it interacts with the present context.

Serpents (Welcome To The Jungle) - Patrick MARTINEZ

The sun sets on a rooftop pool filled with floating roses, while trailing plants hang down from an invisible ceiling. Composed using the popular American life simulation videogame ‘The Sims’, the individual panels of the triptych were painted by a different painter found on the Chinese e-commerce platform, Taobao.

The resulting differences between each panel disrupt the serene and dream-like atmosphere of this rooftop paradise, a startling reminder of the discrepancies between fantasy and reality. Please note each panel of the triptych is painted separately, which results in some unevenness between the three parties, a normal outcome of the artist’s practice.

Limited edition and hand-signed, THE SKATEROOM is proud to present de Balincourt’s ‘New Arrivals’ is one such meditation, described by the artist himself as a reference to growing up in California. Reminiscent of Hockney’s pools, Jules claims to have a less optimistic view than Hockney – this is no longer the hopefulness of the 60s/70s. Today, there is an environmental catastrophe, mortgage foreclosures; this is generation X’s interpretation of the pool as an icon. But this is for the viewer to interpret for themselves.

This art piece is released as a hand-signed triptych skateboard, in an edition size of 50.
